There are a lot of things which go into deciding the ranking on Google.

Nobody knows how the search engine algorithm actually works, and so there is no way to control the Google algorithm working or the way it decides the ranking.

But we can always increase and improve the chances of ranking, with the factors which Google considers while deciding the position.

Google has provided more than 200 factors which it uses while deciding the ranking, and it keeps on adding and updating those factors, from time to time to create better user experience.

So, in this article I have put together a list of top 10 factors which are the most important one before going deep into other things:

1. High Quality content :

Content is the King.

But creating content is not enough to rank and get traffic to your content.

It is required to create high quality content which provides value to your audience.

If your content is of high quality and provides value to the audience then definitely you will get more traffic to your content.

There few things you can consider to make or improve the content:

– Do proper research about the audience you want to target. Knowing and understanding their questions and intent will help you create better content.

– Organize your content. Break the content to make it easy to understand. Use heading and subheadings (H1,H2,H3s…).

– Length of the content is a topic of debate, but in general it has been noticed that deep and meaningful content attracts more traffic.

– Freshness of the content is also important. Remember to update your content from time to time.

– And yes, not to forget to make the content engaging, user engagement sends a direct signal to the search engine algorithm and it definitely affects your position on the web.

2. Keyword optimization:

Before creating content you should do a proper research of Keywords and decide the keyword you want to target and rank for.

To make your keyword optimization fruitful

First decide one primary Keyword you would want to rank for,

and along with that choose at least 3 to 4 secondary keywords, and

also select some LSI keywords ( keyword which have same meaning or intent as your primary keyword or synonyms) for the content you are going to create.

It is important to decide primary, secondary and LSI keywords for keyword optimization as it will save you from keyword stuffing and help you in better keyword targeting.

There was a time when the content creators used to stuff the keywords they want to target, all over there in their content and have got their website ranked for those keywords.

But it doesn’t work anymore.

In fact this kind of activities are considered black hat SEO techniques.

Keyword stuffing can affect your SEO badly.

So, optimization of keywords can boost your rankings, if done properly.

3. Title and meta description :

The title and meta description( short description of the content) should be such which provides a clear idea of what your content is about.

As it increases the quality of user experience and search engine gives more weightage, for providing good user experience.

Also if your description provides a clear Idea of the content then, your website will have a low bounce rate, which helps in improving your position on the search engine.

So, it is highly recommended that your title and description should be such which provides a clear understanding of what your content is about.

There is nothing wrong in giving spark to your title, but making it unnecessarily sensational is not a good practice to follow.

Title and description should be relevant to your content and It is a good practice to include the primary keyword you want to target in the title.

4.User Experience :

User experience is given high weightage in positioning your website.

Better the user experience much better will be your visibility.

As, users coming to your website are also the search engine’s (Google) user, and Google would definitely want their users to have good experience.

So, it’s just not necessary but It’s also mandatory to provide good user experience.

Your website should have user friendly interface.

It should be structured and designed in a way that it is easy to navigate and understand.

5. Website/ page loading speed:

Website or the page loading speed is one of the factors which Google considers, and it does improve the user experience. So, optimizing the speed can definitely boost your rankings.

  • Use compressed images and videos.using images make your content look attractive, but resolution and number of images, you use, affect the page load speed.

You should definitely use images, but take care to optimize them properly, so that your page load speed doesn’t get affected.

  • If your site has a lot of visitors and it includes elements (a lot of videos or images or you have an e-commerce website) which makes it heavy than using a premium hosting service with a dedicated server will definitely boost your website loading speed.

6. Use Https or secure site :

Having a secured site is highly recommended, though it is not a direct ranking factor until now, but definitely provides good user experience.

Anyone would like to be on the website which is secured.

So, whenever you create a website/ blog use an SSL certificate to make it secure.

7. URL structure:

Use short, simple and clear URL.

Avoid using dates and numbers in URLs, as they look unstructured and create a negative impact on SEO efforts.

Using short URLs, which includes your domain name and post/ page name or the keyword you are targeting, is the most recommended practice.

8. Mobile usability:

In November 2016 Google announced the mobile first indexing. Which means that your website should be mobile responsive.

As a lot of search happens on the mobile nowadays, Google has declared it as an important ranking factor.

It gives preference to the websites which are mobile responsive.

So, keep a note of it, and do not miss it at all.

9. Crawlability:

crawling is the process where search engines get to know and understand about your website or the content you have created, and based on the information it collects, get it indexed on its server.

There are several ways you can help crawlers to crawl your website:

  •  having proper site structure with clear hierarchy
  • create and submit XML sitemap
  • check the robot.txt file
  • structured URL or permalink

These factors help crawlers to crawl and understand your website and index it in a better way.

10. Backlinks :

Links from other websites to your content or websites, provides signal to the search engine that your content is valuable enough to be linked.

But not all backlinks carry same value.

So while creating backlinks to your website/blog remember these two points:

  • Quality : Not all the links provide equal value. So, focus should be on getting quality links rather than having quantity of links.
  • Relevancy: The website providing backlink to your content should be relevant to your content or website.

Creating high quality and valuable content that people find it useful to provide backlink to it.

Guest blogging :It is publishing an article on someone else’s website. It is a good source to get genuine backlink.

As I already told you that there are more than two hundred factors that google considers for a website.

And there is no clarity of how the google rankings work.

But if you are creating :

  • Quality content
  • On consistent basis
  • For solving users query and to add value to their life
  • With great user experience
  • And with even a very basic technical SEO

Your website will 100% rank.

I hope you got a fair idea about the steps you should start with in your google ranking journey.
